The SIGNAL™ Framework:
Early Detection of Workplace Risk
Over the years, I have often observed that the challenges organisations struggle with are rarely the problems that first appear on the surface.
Declining performance, disengagement, communication breakdowns or resistance to change are often symptoms of deeper issues that remain unspoken and unnoticed.
The SIGNAL™ Framework is a practical tool I have used to help identify some of the early warning signs that may indicate underlying cultural, engagement or performance risks within teams.
I have applied this way of thinking not only within organisational environments, but also in learning and development settings, where team progress was being affected by challenges that were not immediately visible. Once the underlying signals were identified, meaningful conversations and targeted interventions became possible.
The SIGNAL™ Framework focuses on six key indicators:
🔹 S – Silence
🔹 I – Isolation
🔹 G – Growing Cynicism
🔹 N – Neglected Ownership
🔹 A – Avoidance
🔹 L – Loss of Purpose
Individually, these signals may appear small.
Collectively, they can provide valuable insight into what is happening beneath the surface of a team, department or organisation.
The earlier leaders identify the signals, the earlier they can take action to strengthen trust, engagement, collaboration and sustainable performance.
Because culture rarely breaks overnight.
It sends signals long before it cracks.
